Hybrid and electric vehicles, besides being created due to the high cost of fuel scarcity, are also designed to reduce carbon emissions. While many believe that electric or hydrogen vehicles are the solutions to this problem, some manufacturers argue that reducing vehicle weight can also achieve this goal.
At a technology strategy briefing held in Tokyo, Suzuki President Toshihiro Suzuki stated that when a vehicle's weight is reduced by 200 kilograms, manufacturing energy consumption can be cut by 20%, and driving energy consumption by 6%. The current average weight of cars sold in the Japanese market is 892 kilograms, significantly lighter than the industry average of 1261 kilograms.
However, they believe there is still room to make vehicles even lighter. The first target is the small car model Alto. They mentioned that the next generation of Alto aims to reduce its weight by 100 kilograms, which will not only improve fuel efficiency but also reduce the number of parts used, thereby lowering carbon emissions during manufacturing and driving.
To achieve the goal of reducing 100 kilograms, Suzuki plans to use the next-generation lightweight platform, HEARTECT. Toshihiro Suzuki emphasized that reducing weight does not necessarily mean using expensive lightweight parts. Although he did not disclose specific methods, he mentioned that it might be achieved by "omitting interior materials."
Toshihiro Suzuki also stated that if unnecessary functions can be omitted to reduce weight and lower costs, the three-door model of the Alto might make a comeback.
Suzuki predicts that by 2035, hybrid vehicles will become mainstream in the Japanese market, mainly due to their superior thermal efficiency engines. Suzuki aims to achieve carbon reduction goals through cost reduction and improved fuel efficiency in hybrid systems.
