On April 26th, Honda held its "2023 Business Update" conference, hosted by President and Representative Director Seiji Kuraishi and Executive Vice President Shinji Aoyama. This annual event, which marks the third consecutive year, reveals Honda's future direction.
During the conference, Honda unveiled its goals for private vehicle electrification. The company aims to achieve 100% electric vehicles (EVs) and fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEVs) by 2040, with a plan to produce 2 million EVs/FCEVs annually by 2030. In the North American market, Honda plans to collaborate with GM to develop and launch two EVs, "Honda Prologue" and "Acura ZDX," by 2024. Additionally, after 2025, a medium-to-large sized EV with a new electronic/electrical architecture will be introduced.
Honda has also outlined its electrification strategy for the Chinese market. The plan involves introducing 10 EV models by 2027 and achieving full electrification of all models by 2035. In the Japanese market, Honda will launch EVs based on the N-VAN and N-ONE platforms in 2024 and 2025, followed by two more new EV models in 2026, thereby accelerating domestic electrification efforts.
Regarding the crucial aspect of batteries in electric vehicles, Honda is actively pursuing development. Apart from the existing lithium-ion batteries, Honda is collaborating with SES to develop the next-generation semi-solid state batteries. Furthermore, the company is independently working on solid-state batteries, which are expected to be a game-changing new battery technology.
