While many automotive manufacturers around the world are enthusiastic about the electric vehicle market, the famous Japanese brand Mazda has found itself in an awkward position. Their only electric vehicle model, the MX-30, has not been selling well in the US market this year, with only 66 units sold in the first half of the year, far below expectations. As a result, Mazda has once again decided to halt sales of this model.

According to a report by the foreign media outlet "electrek," Mazda decided to reintroduce the MX-30 in the US in January of this year, but only sold it in California. Unfortunately, the monthly sales in the first three months were only in single digits, reaching a new high of 18 units in May, but dropping back down to 16 units in June. Therefore, only 66 units were sold in the first half of 2023, forcing Mazda to discontinue sales of this pure electric vehicle.

It is worth mentioning that MX-30 was first launched in the US in 2021, but only sold 505 units in the first year, failing to meet Mazda's initial target of 560 units, and was discontinued in 2022. After returning to the market in 2023, sales have been even worse. Unlike the first time when there was no press release about stopping sales, this time Mazda announced the decision to halt sales, causing the public to question whether the MX-30 will ever return to the market again.

The discontinuation of MX-30 in the US market means that Mazda currently has no pure electric vehicle models available in the US market. Although Mazda still has a plug-in hybrid electric vehicle, the MX-30 R-EV, which uses a rotary engine as a generator and has a range of 53 miles, it is not sold in the US.

In the MX-30 sales suspension press release issued by Mazda, they stated that they will focus on plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEV) on large platforms, such as the first CX-90 PHEV to be launched in 2024, as well as the upcoming CX-70 PHEV and CX-50 Hybrid, but did not mention any future plans for pure electric vehicles.
